Research objective 3 (RO3) – Animal nutrition
The target of RO3 comprises the feeding strategies used in livestock production.
RO 3 deals with the conditions of animal production, emphasis is on the quality and safety of feed used, including the transport and storage conditions as well as the production of compound feed. A strategic initiative for the development of new and the expansion of existing resources in feed production needs to be reviewed. Here the specifics of agriculture and compound feed production should be checked in the commercial sector. The focus is placed on influences from traditional modes of production regarding the spread of pathogens, in particular zoonotic pathogens in the herd that may reach consumers through animal food, and on known feeding strategies to exercise a significant influence on the safety of food of animal origin. Here, special attention should be paid to factors that influence or minimize the spread of Salmonella in livestock.
As such, questions on the primary quality of the raw materials used and process-technological issues are in focus. Also of interest is whether there are viable options in the agricultural livestock to prevent or reduce the transmission of zoonotic pathogens or the carry-over of aflatoxins in foods. These include aspects of monitoring (including uniform sampling and analysis plans, recognition of analysis and quality certificates), the decontamination and the use of specific measures, such as feed additives.
